Cell Dissection
Purpose:
What are the positive indicators tests for proteins, carbohydrates, and fats? Do parts of eggs test positive for proteins, carbs., and/or fats.
Materials:
Procedure:
PART 1
DATA ANALYSIS PART 1
Day 1 the egg was covered in bubbles and the shell had dissolved from the vinegar , then we put it in the salt water. Day 2 it was a little smaller and it was kind of see through, then we washed it and put inside the de-ionized water bath. Day 3 the egg was bigger and firm and when we cut it open it exploded.
PART 2
Monosaccharide Indicator standard test
What are the positive indicators tests for proteins, carbohydrates, and fats? Do parts of eggs test positive for proteins, carbs., and/or fats.
Materials:
- Eggs
- beaker 250ml
- White Vinegar
- Plastic Wrap
- Slotted spoon
- Sodium Chloride
- Distilled water
- Beaker 100ml
- Pipets 5ml
- Pipet pump Green
- Tubes glass 13 X 10 mm
- Peg racks for tubes 13 x 10 mm
- Glucose (dextrose)
- Benedicts solution
- Hot plate stirrer
- Test tube holder
- Starch soluble
- Lugol's iodine solution
- Vortex Mixture
- Gelatin
- Sodium Hydroxide
- Cupic sulfate 5-hydrogen oil
- Sudan IV solution
- Scalpel handles #4
- Scalpel Handle blades #22 for #4 handles
- Trays plastic
Procedure:
PART 1
- Put uncooked egg in white vinegar. label and cover, leave for 1 - 2 days while shell dissolves work on part 2
- After 1 - 2 days gently take egg out of vinegar with slotted spoon and rinse with water. A chemical reaction happened, What chemicals were involved as reactants and products?
- Place the egg in a beaker of 5% NaCl (sodium chloride) for 1 day. What happened to the egg?
- Rinse egg and then put it in a beaker of distilled water for 1 day. Describe the egg. What caused the change in appearance
- To retrieve the egg cell gently slice the egg open and let the white fall through the slotts of the spoon into a beaker.
- Place egg yolk in different beaker

PART 2
Monosaccharide Indicator standard test
- test for glucose: mix 2ml of 2% glucose with 2 ml of Benedict's solution, heat for 2 minutes. record all color changes and the time it was that color
- test for water mix 2ml of water with 2ml of Benedict's solution, heat for 2 minutes. record all color changes and the time it was that color
- Test for starch: in a test tube, mix 2ml of starch suspension with .25ml of Lugols iodine. record color change
- Test for water: in a test tube, mix 2ml of water with .25ml of Lugols iodine . record color
Protein indicator Standard test
- Test for protein: put 2ml of gelatin in a test tube then put .75ml of biuret reagent, mix together well, record color change after 30 seconds
- Test for water: Put 2ml of water in a test tube the add .75 ml of biuret reagent, mix together well, record color change.
Lipid indicator Standard test
- Test for lipids: mix 2ml of oil and 60 micro liters of sudan IV record color changes
- Test for water: mix 2ml of water and 60 micro liters of sudan IV record color changes
PART 3
- Conduct each indicator test on all the parts of the egg
- Record all the data from the tests on each part of the egg
- Give a numerical value to what the strength of each part was.
Data analysis/conclusion
Positive indicator for test for proteins are purple when mix with biuret reagent, for carbohydrates very dark brown with iodine and orange after it was cooked with Benedict's solution, for fats pink when mixed with Sudan IV. The egg yolk tested negative for everything, while the egg white tested positive for carbohydrates and protein, and the egg membrane tested positive for everything. I feel like we messed up on the egg yolk tests because it was negative for everything which dose not seem reasonable.I feel like that if the tests were correct the egg yolk would have had fat and protein. We could us this indicator test for drinks and to test what parts of animals have carbs, proteins, and fats.

Reflection
I found out what the different parts of the egg contain and how to test for certain materials. The most interesting thing was testing the indicators. I feel that we worked well together and I had a great time working with Poh. We had a good time and did the work equally. This lab was very fun and I learned a lot. The one thing that I would have done would be a little cleaner because there was a little cross contamination. Overall this lab was awesome and really fun.
